To put a final flourish to the end of a school year, John Broadbent swung into action again with a Royal Charity Ball.  The Sumner Library became "a glittering Parisian champagne bar, there was a huge marquee on the Monitors' Lawn, and Big School and the Dining Hall were provided with dance floors catering for traditional and modern musical tastes.  The youthful guest of honour,  Prince Edward arrived at 6 pm and a nine-course dinner was served in the marquee with entertainment provided during the meal by various cabaret artists, culminating in Brian Conley and his entourage, singing extracts from Les Miserables.

Extract from "The Tide Flows On" by Derek Winterbottom.
