Southern Tour Report – August 2024

5th August 2024

The OR’s gathered in leafy Hampshire for our annual T20 fixture at Hawkley CC.

Batting first, having won the toss on a slow wicket, the OR’s accumulated steadily and with the help of 20 extras set a total for Hawkley to chase of 130.

Charlie Clark scored 19, Joe Warwick 46, Luke Williams 13 and John Morrison 10.

Hawkley just couldn’t get going in the run chase due to both tight bowling and outstanding fielding, and although they finished 15 runs short on 115 they had only lost 4 wickets. Luke Williams, Josh Hamnet and Joe Warwick shared the wickets in what was another excellent victory.

6th August 2024

Game two of the tour took us to Sussex to play the Old Hurstjohnians at Hurstpierpoint College, a fixture we have played every year for over 50 years.

The start was delayed until 2.00pm resulting in a shortened game of 30 overs per side. The OR’s elected to bat and on a wicket which was very two paced scoring proved very difficult.

However, we posted a total of 133 for 8 which both teams felt was way under par. Josh Hamnet scored 27, Tom Morrison 22, Charlie Clark 25, Henry Faj 15 and Max Laboda 17.

That score meant we had to field very well and bowl even tighter. That we did restricting the Old Hurstjohnians to 131 for 7, securing a victory by 3 runs. The wickets were shared between Tom Morrison, Joe Warwick, Will Gair and Henry Faj.

7th August 2024

Worth School is the location for our fixture with the Old Amplefordians in another truncated game of  30 overs per side.

The OR’s batted first on a slow pitch and even slower outfield and laboured to a paltry 124 for 5. It proved harder to get out than score runs but positive contributions were made by Charlie Clark 32, Matt Dryden 25 and Luke Williams 27.

Taking the pitch and outfield into account we believed this was a small but defendable total and it would have proved to be true had not been for one unfortunate dropped catch allowing the Old Amplefordians to knock the runs of for the loss of 6 wickets.

Luke Williams took the bowling honours with a return of 3 for a somewhat expensive 38 runs.

The tour ran from 3rd to 6th August 2024 and we would really welcome new players to join us.

Old Rossallians in attendance:

Jonty Arundel, Charlie Clarke, Bob Cooke, Matt Dryden, Henry Faj, Will Gair, Howard Green, Josh Hamnett, Max Laboda, Charlie Mills, John Morrison, Tom Morrison, Joe Warwick, Luke Williams.
