It is with great sadness that we announce the death of Jim Cowpe.
Jim joined Rossall Junior School in 1949, moving onto Dragon Crescent and leaving in 1956. He returned as a master in Junior School in 1962, becoming Deputy Headmaster to Billy Budge, before leaving to join his family in the North Euston Hotel in 1980.
His involvement in Rossall is unparalleled. As well as being a pupil and teacher, he was a member of Council, General Secretary of the Rossallian Club on three separate occasions and President of the Rossallian Club.
For many years he formed the Jim Cowpe XI Rossall Hockey Team to play the School XI, which gave the school players the required 3 games they needed, in addition to the Old Rossallian and Common Room XI’s, to be awarded their hockey school colours.
Under the stewardship of Jim and Moira, with his sister and brother-in-law, Hilary and Roger Johns, the North Euston Hotel became a haven for Rossallians visiting the area and the venue for many delightful Lancashire Branch Dinners.
Jim is an absolute legend of Rossall School. There can be few others who have contributed so much and been as devoted to Rossall as Jim.
It was just in August this year that we enjoyed Jim and Moira’s wonderful company at the Yorkshire Network Connect meeting, held at their daughter Vicki’s pub, the Buck Inn. Jim was in sparkling form, denouncing the modern era of social media and data protection, favouring pen and paper and good old “Snail Mail”.
Our deepest sympathies go to Moira and Vicki.
