I'm Tom - I studied at Rossall between 2006 and 2012.
I started off in Anchor house, moved up to Spread Eagle in Year 9, and became the SE house captain in September 2011.
A keen sportsman, during my time at Rossall I played first team rugby, second team hockey and football and a few lower team sports.
It was during my time at Rossall that I discovered my passion for technology, and the internet which resulted in me learning the basics of web development in my spare time.
My passion for technology and design grew stronger, and I pursued an education in graphic design, going on to achieve a 2:1 in Graphic Design from the University of Huddersfield.
My first job out of University was as a Junior Designer for a startup company in Manchester - They picked up on my basic knowledge of web development, and pushed me to continue learning in that field.
My passion was reignited - I spent my evenings and weekends learning web development, and got to the point where I was a stronger developer than I was a designer.
For the next 8 years I worked in various digital marketing agencies in and around the Leeds area, as a web developer, building websites for clients; both large and small, all over the world.
In 2021, after testing the waters slightly, I made the decision to go at it alone. I became a freelance web developer with the hope of working small contracts for big clients or agencies.
It's been 18 months so far and I've loved every minute. My job is so varied, and running everything through my limited company has taught me a lot about how everything works.
I've actually gotten to the point where I'm leaning towards starting my own small agency, and will need to hire designers and developers in the very near future.
I'd be keen to offer my advice, knowledge and experiences to any Rossalians, soon to head off into the real world - in particular those who want to pursue a career in the digital marketing / creative space.

I left Rossall in 1990 and spent my gap year in the British Army. I then took Army sponsorship to Dundee University where I read an MA before returning to Sandhurst for a year and then joining the Royal Scots Dragoon Guards for a Short Service Commission. My time in the Army took me to Germany, Canada and Bosnia. Upon completion of my Army service, I returned to university – this time in Glasgow- where I read Scots law on their accelerated LLB course. Since qualifying as a lawyer I have worked in Edinburgh and the Scottish Borders, and have specialised in farming and agriculture. I am accredited by the Law Society of Scotland as a specialist in this area, and recently passed my exams as an agricultural valuer.

Mr Richard J J Pilkington BDS, MBBS, FDSRCS, MRCS, FRCS
Consultant Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery
Cumberland Infirmary, Carlisle
Serving a population of 500,000
I left Rossall in 1989, from starting in the Pre-preparatory school under Mildred Kirk-Smith, then Chris Gordon Jones in Junior School. Senior school was a mix of Falcon then as a boarder under David Owen in Spread Eagle.
Graduated from University of Birmingham, School of Dentistry 1995.During my studies had the opportunity to learn forensic dentistry during my elective visit in Cardiff, just as the Cromwell St murders were being discovered.
After a year in general dental practice followed by 2 years as a Senior house officer in maxillofacial surgery at Sunderland General Hospital then Addenbrookes, Cambridge. I was offered a place to read medicine at Newcastle University, School of Medicine. I was awarded a travel bursary from the Royal College of surgeons and BAOMS, so took the opportunity of visiting the Department of Plastic Surgery at Chang Gung Memorial Hospital Taiwan for my medical studies before backpacking around Malaysia/Borneo. I qualified as a doctor in 2001, then after a year as a junior doctor at the Freeman, Newcastle I decided to take a gap year and work abroad.
Mostly inspired by the Michael Palin books and also my sister, Catherine Pilkington (France) JS, Wren, I spent a year half of which was travelling around the world starting in Japan and following the Pacific Rim for most of it. The other half working, firstly as a surgical registrar then ultimately being accepted onto the OMFS training programme in New Zealand.
However, I decided to return to the UK after a year away and returned to dental practice where I worked in primary care and at postgraduate level.
I finally returned back to the world of medicine where I spent several years as a junior doctor working in several surgical specialties and completed my registrar training in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery partly in the West Midlands and the remainder in the North East.
I have an interest in facial deformity, skin cancer and reconstruction, dental implants, oral surgery, salivary gland disease and trauma. I am currently working on research with the University of Glasgow in developing a monitoring device for free flaps used in head and neck cancer reconstruction. I have published in peer reviewed journals and sit on the Editorial board of reviewers for the British Journal of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery. I have presented at National and International level.
I find it to be a privilege to a doctor, dentist and most importantly a surgeon to help care for the patients that I look after. Anyone wanting to consider a career in surgery, you should be prepared to accept that it is a lifetime commitment where you will be always learning and trying to master your trade.
You need self-determination, drive, be a team player and most importantly to be able to talk to your patients. Patients put their ultimate trust in you and you should always try to do your best for them. I also believe in the plasticity of the human mind and like Jacob Bronowski and his “The Ascent of Man” if you want to become a surgeon and want it bad enough then the human mind will make it happen! Or perhaps like the school motto, “Mens, agitat, Molem”.
I had the pleasure of speaking to a former O.R Gordon Hardman who had been the past President of B.A.O.M.S before I returned to medical school. I remember him telling me that our surgical training path was a long hard road and he was certainly right about that. But thanks to the likes of his generation, the surgical specialty that I work in offers some of the most exciting and challenging surgery that I have been involved in.

I am Michael and attended Rossall from 2014 to 2017.
During my time there, I was a member of Mitre & Fleur de Lys and became House Captain of MF House in September 2016.
After completing my IB, I studied Business Administration at the University of Vienna and subsequently began my career in consulting.
From my perspective, the steep learning curve in consulting, particularly in client interactions, offers excellent opportunities for recent graduates to quickly gain experience and establish themselves in the professional world.
I look forward to supporting Rossallians as they start their careers.
