Ian Gordon Berry was born on 4 April 1934 and entered Fleur de Lys in September 1947 and left at the end of the summer term in 1950 to join his divorced mother in South Africa. He embarked on a career as a photojournalist and became well-known for his photographs of the 1960 Sharpeville massacre in South Africa, of which he was by chance an eye-witness. He later worked for ‘Drum’ magazine in South Africa and then joined the famous ‘Magnum’ international photography organisation. He has published books of his photographs and has featured in several media programmes. He died aged 92 on 13 September. Our thoughts and condolences are with his family and friends at this sad time.
