Gillian Clube, wife of former housemaster Alan Clube (1963-1991) has died on 21 Jan 2021. She had fought a long battle with dementia and sadly, contracted Covid shortly before the end. She passed comfortably without distress, with the radio playing her favourite piano piece which she herself played into the final months. She gave a great sigh of contentment as its familiar tune started up and she breathed her last.

It was a fitting end for a talented LRSM pianist who served under 4 Directors of Music at Rossall as a piano teacher in the Music Department, invariably achieving excellent music exam results.  Many pupils were inspired by her ability to bring out the best in their piano playing, and they stand as a living memorial to her.

On top of supporting Alan and the boys in his charge over the years in Fleur-de-Lys, Gillian participated fully in Rossall life, signing in the Concert Choir and with Peter Frost’s madrigal group. She and Dad were quick to welcome new members of staff and help them find their feet. As for pupils, they always strived to find and bring out the best in everyone, be it academic, sports or arts.

As her dementia deepened so Gillian still spoke about term and ‘the boys coming back’ such was the hold of and commitment to Rossall she shared with Alan. They were always thrilled in the final years to receive Rossallian visitors and retained strong links with the school and ex Common Room families.

Gillian leaves behind her children Nick (Pre Prep, JS & Fn 1963-1975), Laurence (Pre Prep, JS & SE 1969-1982) and Amanda (Pre Prep, JS & D 1974-1985), all three with their own growing and thriving families. Along with Alan she leaves a wonderful inspiration for them and everyone who knew them to meet life with a welcome and helping hand for those around them.
