Rossall Foundation Heritage Project
Big School Roof
We launched our Heritage project in October 2023 and thanks to our generous donors, a year later we have been able to complete the first stage of this essential project. The first stage was to safeguard Big School roof. This much needed project looks to preserve the historic heart of Rossall but also ensure that the building continues to serve students for generations to come.
After many years of weathering the elements, the roof of Big School has received a well-deserved upgrade. The structure, which has seen countless assemblies, performances, and academic milestones, has had its fair share of wear and tear. With some areas showing signs of damage, we needed to invest in a long-term solution. Work took place between July 2024 and October 2024 and each tile has been assessed and replaced or relaid to ensure the building is now watertight and will withstand the test of time. None of this work would have been possible without the enormous generosity of those who have donated to the Foundation's Future Heritage Project. Big School reopened on October 5th, where we welcomed record-breaking numbers of attendees at our October Open Day!
Next Steps
Due to a generous legacy donation, the Rossall Foundation can now support the refurbishment of the Chapel’s east window. Work is due to commence in 2025, ensuring this magnificent window is preserved and cherished for years to come.
As part of the ongoing Future Heritage Project, our school library will undergo some important planned renovations, including updating the drainage systems. These improvements are essential for preserving the building and ensuring it remains a comfortable, functional space for years to come. Drainage plays a crucial role in maintaining the integrity of old buildings like our library. Without proper drainage, excess water can seep into the foundation, causing damage over time. This can lead to issues such as dampness, mould, and even structural weakening. Thanks to those who have supported the Heritage project, work is due to commence in 2025 to rectify these issues.
There is still much to do as the Chapel is in poor condition. The timber roof structures and internal plaster have been damaged by water ingress. Roof timbers have suffered significant decay and failing plaster work constitutes a concern. There is also a distinction between restoration and refurbishment, and we need to do much more than simply prevent the buildings from falling to the ground. However, Phase 1 of the project is remedial, while Phase 2 is developmental. The purpose of this project is twofold: to preserve the past and to support the future. Please join us in ensuring that the legacy we leave future generations is one of which all Rossallians can feel truly proud.
